🌱 About Groundwork to Grow

Groundwork to Grow was created to support beginning military veterans and community members interested in farming and ranching on Hawaiʻi Island by providing exposure, skill-based training, and a professional network aimed to help them succeed in agricultural careers. Groundwork to Grow prepares participants for the more advanced GoFarm Hawaiʻi: Growing Veterans AgXcel program, which provides more intensive coursework delivered over seven months.

‘Groundwork to Grow,’ is a comprehensive four-week program that focuses on specific agriculture topics relevant to the Pacific Region. Our program incorporates:

  • field trips to local operational farms and ranches,
  • informal lectures (online or in-person),
  • hands-on work days at at Hoʻōla Veteran Services’ Market Garden training plot, and
  • interviews with experts from agencies such as the College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources (CTAHR), UH-Hilo, USDA, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Hoʻōla Farms is offering scholarships for eligible veterans to participate in this program. Those who are interested or who would like additional information can click the button below to fill out our inquiry form or email us at
