Intermediate | Comprehensive 4-week training program for military veterans and community members interested in farming and ranching on Hawaiʻi Island. Scholarships available!

🌱 About this Program

Groundwork to Grow is a collection of four-week exposure-based trainings on various agribusiness topics. The program was created to support military veterans and community members interested in farming and ranching on Hawaiʻi Island by providing exposure, skill-based training, and a professional network aimed to help them succeed in agricultural careers. Our ideal participant is someone who already has introductory experience with farming and who is looking to dive deeper and become more invested.

Workshops will cover agriculture topics relevant to Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Region, including:

  • Value-Added Production (February 2022)
  • Bees & Apiary (April & October 2022)
  • Greenhouse (August 2022)
  • Livestock (Coming in 2023)
  • Orchard & Agroforestry (Coming in 2023)

Our next Groundwork to Grow course is The Art of Beekeeping, happening this October in collaboration with Susan Collins of Bird and Bee Hawai’i !!!

Cost to attend this 4-wk workshop is $200, and includes beekeeping jacket, gloves, hive tools and more!

Each 4-week workshop consists of:

  • 4 Virtual Classroom sessions
    • Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00pm
  • 4 Field Days at local operational farms and businesses
    • Saturdays (timing may vary)

Groundwork to Grow trainings can host 8-12 participants per cohort, so space is limited. We will close registration when capacity is met. 🚨 Past participation in one of our Intro to Grow one-day workshops is required before registering for this program.

📅 Dates & How to Participate

Groundwork to Grow: The Art of Beekeeping is a comprehensive exposure-based course on all aspects of beekeeping on Hawai’i Island. Participants have the opportunity to get hands-on with beekeeping, including hive management, honey harvesting, and assembling bee frames and boxes. In addition, we will learn from various apiary experts and other beekeeping businesses on Big Island.

  • 10/4 Tuesday – Virtual 5:30-7:00pm
  • 10/8 Saturday – Field Day 11:00am-3:00pm
  • 10/11 Tuesday – Virtual 5:30-7:00pm
  • 10/15 Saturday – Field Day 11:00am-3:00pm
  • 10/18 Tuesday – Virtual 5:30-7:00pm
  • 10/22 Saturday – Field Day 11:00am-3:00pm
  • 10/25 Tuesday – Virtual 5:30-7:00pm
  • 10/29 Saturday – Field Day 11:00am-3:00pm

We conduct programs in accordance with federal, state, and local safety guidelines, including COVID protocols. Program participants please note the following:

  • Mask wearing and social distancing while in enclosed spaces is now optional, although we may reinstate COVID rules as needed.
  • Closed-toed shoes and sun protection should be worn in outdoor settings.
  • All on-site educational program participants must complete a liability waiver.
